One reason I am so pessimistic about seeing immigration reform this year, is that the opposition is so serious about stopping it. In past years, immigration law was of interest to business, unions, and human rights advocates, but few others. Now immigration is a big issue among the populace. Though polls show a majority of Americans sympathetic to legalization of undocumented immigrants, a very vocal minority is active in opposition. That makes this complicated debate even more complicated. This Washington Post piece is telling.

Worse, the immigrants’ rights movement is in disarray. More on that in a future posting.
